What does “vaina” mean in Colombian and Caribbean Spanish?

Vaina technically means a pod or a sheath — a case that holds something — but across Colombia, Venezuela, and the Caribbean it has become an all-purpose word for “thing,” filling in for any noun a speaker doesn’t want to specify. In this clip, a husband makes a big show of “wearing the pants” in the house, only for his wife to shut him down, and he backs off with esa vaina me gusta — “I like that thing.”

The word flexes to fit almost any mood: qué vaina expresses frustration or bad luck, pásame esa vaina asks for an object by pointing rather than naming it, and se dañó la vaina means “the thing broke” — any thing at all. It comes from Latin vagina, “sheath,” the container sense stretched over centuries until it became a container for literally anything unnamed.
