What does “huevón” mean in Latin American Spanish?
Huevón is one of the most common words in casual Latin American Spanish, and it can land as an insult (“idiot,” “fool”) or a neutral way to address a friend (“dude”), purely based on tone. In this clip, a mother snaps at her son’s odd question with me faltó vitamina en el embarazo contigo. A huevón, me saliste — “I must’ve been missing a vitamin when pregnant with you. You came out a huevón.”
The adjective form ahuevonado, used earlier in the same clip, means acting slow-witted or oblivious. Etymologically, huevón traces back to castrated bulls (huevones) — animals excused from work, hence lazy — and the related verb huevear means “to waste time” or “to fool around.” Among close friends it’s casual and even affectionate; aimed at a stranger, or by a parent scolding a kid, it’s a real insult.
