Een bestelling doen bij de bakker
A1 Dutch практика аудіювання · Нідерландська · Дібрано для початківців
What does “wat mag het zijn?” mean in Dutch shops?
At a Dutch bakery counter the baker will often greet you with wat mag het zijn?, literally “what may it be?” It’s a very common counter phrase, heard at bakeries, butchers and market stalls, and a friendlier way of asking “what would you like?” You answer it simply with your order: “een bruin brood, alstublieft.”
The verb underneath is mogen (“to be allowed to, may”), the same one behind polite requests like “mag ik een brood?” (“may I have a bread?”). Using “mogen” instead of “willen” (“to want”) softens the whole exchange: the shopkeeper isn’t demanding your order, they’re inviting it. You’ll hear the same formula everywhere from the butcher to the cheese stall, always followed by the customer’s answer, never a grammar lecture.
